Road to Nowhere

Bridgeb_w.jpg

I've been installing OS 10.4 Tiger on my computer over the weekend. It's been quite a challenge getting everything back the way it's supposed to be. Today I was messing around with automator when, in 8 seconds flat, I destroyed my iPhoto library. 4 years and 5000+ photos were suddenly removed from their files and striped of identifying information and dumped into a non-descript folder on my desktop. So now I have my work cut out for me to get that all back the way it should be. I wish I could blame it on automator but it was noobie error. This one is from the vault. At least I didn't erase all the pictures.

Again with the look. It was very puzzled by the big black eye that chirpped whenever it moved.

This bird kept coming closer and closer everytime it heard my camera chirp as the focus locked. The ducks, however, wanted nothing to do with me.

The Fam

They were headed right for me, I was so scared. I could have been KILLED! Shortly after they arrived a little kid at the park screamed BABIES! Then all the little kids were gathering around checking out the babies. It was a lot of fun to watch. To the parents credit, they kept all the little kids at a distance so they could all see and not scare them away.

Don't Gobble up These Peeps

Peeps.jpg

I was squatting down on the grass, sticking my camera in the face of a goose and hoping not to be attacked, when all of the sudden there is a giant ruckus behind me. I turned around to find a stampede of baby ducks headed right for me. In fear for my life I leapt out of the way just in time before being trampled. Luckily I had my camera ready to document my near demise. It's so hard to flip the dials on my camera and get the setting I want in a flash. This one came out a bit grainy, but I like it. It would be better if I hadn't cut off dad's head.

Geese on Skykomish River.jpg

This old bridge runs over the Sammamish River in Bothell, Washington. The only thing going over it these days is bicycles and pedestrians since it's in a greenway. The Geese seem to have been enjoying themselves until a giant boat zoomed by moments after I snapped this shot. I uploaded a "big" version so you can see the details, just click the pic.

I tried this shot MANY times and It just never came out quite right. I was foiled by the propensity of the glass to reflect too much light straight back at me. This one is lit from above. The best looking one overall was lit from just above the lens. I'll have to experiment with some light diffusers to get it just right. This one isn't too bad though.

I Hate Dust

I really like this picture. I think the colors blend so well together. I do, however, hate dust. I just couldn't get rid of it all and I didn't want to spend hours removing it in PS so this will have to do.

Bejeweled

Winthrop.jpg

A friend of mine told me when the sun shines in Winthrop during winter the fields light up as if covered with diamonds. I think she was right. Earlier that morning I went cross country skiing. I reached a large field and at the far end there is a little bench half buried in a thick padding of snow. I skied to the little bench, sat down, and opened my thermos of cocoa. As I sat there, the fog began to swirl in patterns of white and grey as the sun struggled to see the earth. The fog fought valiantly but magically vaporized and left no trace of it's existence other than the hoar frost, left to sparkle back at the sun defiantly. Then, crystals began to form in the air and fall to the ground glinting in the sun. It's the closest thing I can imagine to being in a sno-globe. That was a good day.

Since I didn't post yesterday, you get a 2-fer today. Sort of like buy one hot-dog get the second for free. You hear that a lot as you approach the Mariners Stadium (Safeco Field) in downtown Seattle.

In honor of the Seattle Mariner's strong outing today, and the fact that East3rd.com has declared it alcohol week. Here's a glass of beer. Yah, OK, OK.. give me a minute and I'll empty this here glass.

Spring in My Dining Room

Tulips on my Table.jpg

My first attempt ever at studio type photography. It was far more difficult than I had expected. The lighting issues were really difficult as I don't have any real studio lighting aparatus. This shot came out pretty well. I think I needed a slighly higher f/stop to get a little more focus. The b/w conversion and sepia toning were done in PS.

Come Into the Light

This was an experiment in lighting. I tried to capture as much detail with the available light and yet keep the flame detail as well. It was challenging and I took several iterations before getting it the way I wanted. What do you think?

Scavenger

Gull.jpg

This seagull was keeping a watchful eye on me as I walked the boardwalk near Alki Beach in West Seattle. I don't think he was afraid of me; rather, he was desperately hoping I would drop something he could swallow whole. The Gulls here are quite the scavengers and fight furiously with eachother for any morsel dropped by passers by. I can just hear them squaking Mine, Mine-Mine as in "Finding Nemo."

Soft and Sharp

snow pods.jpg

It didn't snow much here in Seattle this year. I did wake up one morning to find grey skies and air so heavy with moisture I felt as if my clothes were soaked the minute I stepped outside. It was early and I was lucky enough to make the first footprints on the trail near my apartment. This little pod was hanging from a branch as I walked along a path freshly covered with snow. I resisted my urge to pluck it from its fragile branch and examine its contents. It looked well armed to withstand the fluffy white snow resting upon it.

A fern in the rainforrest... I know, it's been done a million times. It was just sooo nice and green I couldn't resist. I think it was a new frond for spring since it was a pale green compared to the older ones below. I'm especially happy that this one came out fairly clear since it's a handheld shot.

The half-light

halflight.jpgThis shot was taken when I rushed home with my new Canon 50mm f/1.4 prime lens. The bokeh is very nice on this lens. The shot is of a shelf of books that I read last summer. I decided that the best way to choose a book is by it's cover despite the cliché. This way I never know what's inside until I open the cover.

City Skyline.jpgWent for a ride just as the sun was setting and captured this nice shot of downtown Seattle from the West Seattle waterfront. The sun gave the city a beautiful glow. Odd to think I've never seen the sun rise from the ocean; here it only sinks into it as the heat of the day gives way, nightly, to the cool Puget Sound breezes.

Mortar and Pestle

m&p.jpgThis was a gift from my Mom and Dad while I was in Pharmacy School. I have a whole collection now. I shot this on my coffee table and used this picture to try some new sharpening techniques. It's a bit oversharp if you ask me. It's almost jumping off the screen at me and I can only look at it for a short period before it freaks me out. What do you think?
