I tried this shot MANY times and It just never came out quite right. I was foiled by the propensity of the glass to reflect too much light straight back at me. This one is lit from above. The best looking one overall was lit from just above the lens. I'll have to experiment with some light diffusers to get it just right. This one isn't too bad though.
Camera = Canon 20D
Lens = Canon 50mm f/1.4
Shutter = 1/60s
Aperture = f/1.6
Focal Length = 50mm
Flash = Off
ISO Speed = 100

I love the warm lighting in this, and the tiny bit of blue at the top of the stem...such an elegant pattern on the glass itself as well...
Beautiful shot! I love the subtle tones here, and the lighting is nice. I would have been tempted to get in closer for some abstracts, especially due to the cool pattern on the glass. BTW, that's a HECK of a lens you've got there (if it's the one I'm thinking of)... How do you like it?
Hi east3rd, thanks for your comments.
This is my favorite lens. I have to say that it takes such smooth crisp shots compared to my other two lenses. This is as close as I can get with it. The focusing distance isn't great. I need to pick up some of those close-up filters you've got. I had a hard time spending the money on the lens, so to convince myself I went around on the web to see if I could tell the difference between the f/1.8 and the 1.4. And I could about 80% of the time so I spent the money. I can't, however, tell the difference in your shots. You have a knack for getting them very smooth.
I also shoot a lot with a 50mm f/1.4, but mine's a Nikon. I just love the point of view you get with a 50mm on a 1.5 or so DSLR, and probably use it too much. For close up work like the martini glasses who needs a macro when the 50mm prime focuses so close?
Anyway here's my version of the martini glass:
