Surprise Lake

Here's a picture from my backpacking trip last weekend to Surpise Lake and Glacier Lake in the Alpine Lakes wilderness area in Washington. The hike was fantastic with terrific scenery. However, the bug were totally out of control. I think I'll make this one an early season hike next time to avoid getting eaten alive.

Drafting Pencil

I picked up this little box of old drafting pencils at a flea market in Spokane, Washington in 1989. I have no idea how old they really are but they still work fine. I was digging through a drawer and found them again after many years. I think it's neat how old tools that are well used inspire us to pick them up and see what we can create with them. Like old medalions to the thumb we hold them and think of where they've been, and were they could take us.

I'm certainly no artist so luckily the morning sun made a nice photograph of this old set as I left it on my dining room table after sketching with them for a few hours.

Fly Away Home

These butterflies were EVERYWHERE during my hike. The wild flowers were in full bloom, and the flying bugs were relentless. This is one of the few that I don't mind seeing on the trail. Although they have really long legs which sort of freaks me out.
